Besides interning for the city, I took it upon myself to staff one of their committees. I was invited by my supervisor to attend the Centennial Planning Committee meeting. This committee was formed to develop, implement, and execute Legacy Projects for the State of Arizona's centennial celebration in 2012.
At my first meeting, I volunteered to take the minutes. Before I knew it, I was drafting the agenda; scheduling the meetings; interacting with the committee members; and organizing our legacy projects. These consists of constructing a trail up to Monument Hill which is the point of origin for all land surveyed in Arizona dating back to the 1850s (I know this is so cool and its right there in Avondale on top of a hill just east of the Phoenix International Raceway where Avondale Boulevard and Baseline Road meet); uploading Avondale's historical pictures under the AZ Memory Project; and preserving Pioneer Cemetery where many Avondale residents were buried that worked for Goodyear Farms back when it was all just farming land.
Its an evening meeting which makes for a long day but I really enjoy being a part of this committee because it gives me a chance to work with our residents. It also gives me a sense of fulfillment as I am a part of something that will come to fruition within the next couple of years.
